I suspect people who come to the military with brains already pretty much programmed for the military (or "prewashed" if you will), probably need less "washing" than more iconoclastic individuals. Several members of my family (all iconoclasts, how surprising :-) have felt the military was a brainwashing machine.

Almost every situation is capable of being perceived in many different ways. If you are (for example) a willing happy member of a cult, you are unlikely to perceive anything done to you as brainwashing, while the perception of someone on the outside, or someone resisting the cult, could be very different. Everything always comes down to relativism- and some people are willing to get down in the mud over a non-allignment of perceptions, and some people aren't. It's probably more relaxing to be one of the people who aren't...
