My husband saw that in some of the people around him. Like many people who resist cult like behavior, my husband found curious secret ways to resist the authority, and assert his independence, and keep his individuality. He also got out as soon as he could, realizing the military was a terrible fit for someone as freethinking as he is. I don't fault the military for it's use of techniques that involve mind control- in fact I think they may be absolutely necessary. Denying that they exist, on the other hand, seems just odd. But odd is ok, as long as people hold their odd ideas nicely.

Hi Grannie

I just thought I would drop by for some cookies and milk when I noticed your post. I think it's probably a valid observation about the mindset of soldiers. After all, that is the entire point of basic training, is it not? Not to think but to follow orders unquestionably, unhesitatingly. A soldier is not permitted the luxury that you and I have to sit and ponder things. They must act quickly and decisively if they are to be effective. Now if you want an ineffective fighting force then teach them to ask "what's my motivation" before they obey any order.

Any oatmeal raisin ones left?

If they lost their reasoning skills then their military training failed. It is not designed to cause people to lose their reasoning skills, nor would such a result be considered beneficial. This is esp. so when you are talking about relatively elite forces, and officers, both of whom undergo more training. Dull robotic thinking gets you killed in combat.
