Actually, that question is near to irrelevant in terms of the overall war and long-term benefit.

We've been attacked numerous times before, and it shouldn't surprise that an attempt is made on a Naval ship now. Allies or no, Al Qaeda is within our own borders, so this doesn't "say something here," certainly not about the long term results of our fighting back.
