"You can always find former servicemen who will speak ill of their service experiences, for whatever grudges or political motives"

Or maybe, they speak ill of it because it was a crappy experience for them. People will differ in their response to what you term "a healthy degree of humbling". Sometimes one man's shouted "humbling" is another man's abusive treatment. Odd how that happens, isn't it? I think we see the same thing on SI all the time.

Your post reveals a personal cosmology with a complete inability to imagine any experience other than your own. It's nice you and your sons didn't feel brainwashed, but that doesn't mean the military does not use techniques that fit in to the classical forms of brainwashing, nor does it mean other people do not feel that the military tried very forcefully to squash out their individuality. And what is the only reason you can imagine for the rest of the world not having your reactions to things? " grudges or political motives"

What a narrow and limited view this is in your post. One hopes it's just pique that makes you express things this way.

Classic conservative argumentation- first claim another person doesn't have first hand knowledge, or access to someone with firsthand knowledge- then when first hand knowledge is brought forth, personally attack the person who has the knowledge. Way to go!!!
