Without the ability to communicate vast amounts of complex knowledge to each other, we'd still be gathering nuts and berries. Each person would have to reinvent everything and, therefore, would be too occupied with survival to do anything mythical or otherwise. Each of us, at birth, stands on the shoulders of those who came before us. It doesn't matter who they were or when and where they lived, we've retained their knowledge and can build upon it. I know plenty of people without imagination. They live as their ancestors have lived with fundamentalists being their most extreme incarnation.
