mad cow is noise because it's irrelevant to MCD's long term prospects, unless you somehow think people will just stop eating beef in droves, and permanently....even then, MCD can sell them chicken, fish, fries, salads, breakfast, add some pork item, whatever

if an investor liked MCD longer term, a mad cow-induced drop in the price of the stock would be an opportunity to buy or add at a discount

as for the rest, no matter if they do a spinoff or not, the thesis remains the same: MCD's core business grows at a very small rate, chipotle is currently growing much faster...either chipotle stays under the corporate umbrella and causes the growth rate to increase, or it is spun off and earns a higher multiple for that part of the business..either way the thesis would be that shareholders are rewarded, as MCD rises, or MCD stays basically flat but the spun off shares of chipotle benefit the shareholder

lots of companies have faster and slower growing divisions, CSCO, GE, MSFT, the list is nearly endless...many of these companies do very well managing the various divisions in various states of maturity and growth...whether or not MCD can excel at managing its core business and chipotle at the same time remains to be seen

it all comes down to whether you like MCD and its management, and consider the stock to be a worthy investment...for me the growth is not sufficient, even if it was increased 20 or 30% by chipotle, which i doubt could happen...as such, the stock doesn't interest me, if it drops down to under 30 i would consider it for a trade

again, let's move on to another idea, i don't think this one is of much interest to the thread, but at least it's a stock discussion instead of the idiotic "cramer is a criminal" posts <g>
