Free Republic had a live thread going yesterday -- actually a series of live threads, nine by last count, they would lock one and start a new one after they reached about 3000 posts. One lady was saying her dad decided to ride out the storm in a house three blocks from the beach that weathered Camille. I fear that same calculation was made by many.

My sister in Baton Rouge is without power. Can't get through to my dad but I am sure he's fine. Sister says all the New Orleans relatives are staying with my uncle. No word on the Biloxi relatives yet.

A doctor where my sister works says his brother stayed at the family residence in Chalmette, and when the storm surge came tried to rescue his mother's cats but they drowned before he could get to them.

Most phones in Baton Rouge seem to be out. That's all I know so far. It's frustrating.
