The Mississippi River flood of 1927 was a natural disaster of Biblical proportions -- I don't think we've ever had anything to compare to that.

There was a good documentary made about it at the time, saw it in history class. The River. Documentary film by Pare Lorentz.

Rent it from Netflix on a collection of documentaries made during the Great Depression.
