I agree, but would add that corruption on one side is matched by corruption on the other side. There is a symmetry here, Gem. Some sort of a social reflex akin to "every action has an equal and opposite reaction." Whatever the secret motives (or not so secret if you have a little objectivity and take a world-view) of the terrorist leaders, they are playing their followers hatred of the USA for our policies of the past.

We are rewarding their shrill claims by proving to be what they said we were - not as a military state, although we are coming perilously close. No, it is our rapacious corporate policies that are undermining us. Whilst we claim "freedom" and "open-markets" we seek to suppress the access of others to the benefits we enjoy - syphoning off the profits everywhere - even as corporate leaders do to workers here at home.

The problem with purely Darwinian social organization is that, while it will elevate the strongest while killing off the weakest (ideas, ways or people) it inevitably leads to escalation, and that does mean nuclear war. Why not? If you know you are going to lose anyway - or if you do not care about humanity at all and can grab advantage...

Why not?
Naturally, this could be said from either side.
