"Already, one million barrels of petroleum a day are being spun out of the sand and pumped south, and that number is projected to triple within the next decade."

I think it's really just a factor of the price of oil. I've been told that production is feasible and profitable as long as the price per barrel is over $50.

This isn't the only thing out there. Half the new cars sold in Brazil are "flex-fueled" cars that can run on 100% ethanol to 100% gasoline, and any blend in between. The ethanol comes from Brazilian sugar cane, but could be made from corn or many other plants.
