But food, water and personal hygiene supplies for a year! Or even 90 days! Wow. They'd think I flipped my lid.

90 days is what I recommend to my own family.
But I do like the Mormon Church's recommendation to their congregation to keep two year's supply of food on hand.

Emergency food supplies do not have to be expensive. 2-50 pound bags of rice and 50 pounds of beans will easily keep for a coupla years and cost less than $100.

Tom Ridge's suggestion to have an emergency kit with three days supplies of food is too light.
