I have a 40-gig USB-2/firewire hard drive that fits in my shirtpocket. You could mail that pretty easily but I personally would want some assurance that I would get it back.

I assumed there would be an updated version or add-on to the Windows backup software that would allow copying to DVD. Guess not. Since your goal is archiving, a hard drive is useless since it's finite. Removable storage would be expensive and require something compatible on the other end, so that's not high on the list, but possible. On-line back-up is easy and convenient, but you are pushing things at 25G, let alone piling on 40G at a time... and it's way expensive (not to mention you feel much more secure having the data in your physical possession), so that's not much of an alternative.

So, yes, a file-splitting utility that allows the recipient to recreate the data without corresponding software looks like the best way to go. I see from TuCows that File Splitter Deluxe is both popular and relatively current. I assume that's the software you have chosen.
