Googling it shows it has a population of about 30k and a local population of 90k. slidell.la.us The problem is all of the roads are low and very prone to washing out. So in the aftermath of even a low category hurricane the roads often are washed out. Have you loaded Google Earth? If you look at these two, you can see why those places suffered a lot.
