It is human nature to want to separate ourselves into divisions. We typically do it along the lines of race and religion. Division almost always creates an us vs. them attitude which leads to acrimony and sometimes to violence. European countries have always been a little snooty in their thinking. They claim to be inclusive, but letting lots of Muslim immigrants into their countries, but they do a piss poor job of integrating them. Most Muslims in those countries feel that they are discriminated against and that they can't get jobs, etc. That leads to acrimony and violence. America, although by no means perfect, has done a much better job at integrating different races and religions. We had a rocky start with the Indians and black people, whom we treated abominably, but since then, especially in the last 50 years, incredible strides have been made to integrate people. Much is left to be done, but I still believe integration and stamping out discrimination is the key to a healthy society. Now I'm the last person to preach to others about discrimination. I used to think I was non-discriminatory, but in the last 3 years, for the first time in my life, I'm feeling very discriminatory against Muslims. So the point is that we all struggle, but integration and non-discrimination should be the goal and that will help societies overcome their differences. A state like Israel's whose very structure is based on Jewish purity is doomed to violence and ultimately failure, UNLESS God really has a special plan for Israel to protect them from eventual disintigration, but that's a religious discussion for a different debate.
