That's different from the clean burning of coal for the generation of electricity. That definitely is possible and cheaper than burning hydrocarbon fuels for the same purpose.
The American Electric Power company is building the first really clean plant for doing so. I should be in full operation in 2009.
SO we can reduce the need for hydrocarbons. However it takes time and meanwhile the hydrocarbons,i.e. oil + natural gas, are depleting.

Wait justa minute. 70 dollar a barrel and technology has made things a bit different from previous decades.We are in a whole new ball game. He mentioned that the cost of oil has changed the economics. Again it's the availability not the cost that's most important.Believe me 5 years from now we will wish we got started today on this.
