I agree. As I say, maybe I'm being pessimistic, but the storm really dredged up all of the other problems the city had, economic and social (and we both know they are very profound, deeply-ingrained problems). There's been a steady brain drain out of NO since around the late 50's. I graduated from High School in the mid 70's, from a very prestigious school, and probably 90% of my classmates left town after graduation, never to return. If folks had talent, ability or brains, they all pursued better opportunities elsewhere, and I imagine this will greatly accelerate the trend. Sometimes a cataclysmic event like this acts as a catalyst for change, but only (as the joke about the psychiatrist and the light bulb goes) if people REALLY want it to change.
