There is too much to even process it all. Here's a few odd bits. Tulane University is sending all students home. Info is at the Tulane Emergency Siteemergency.tulane.edu Beauvoir, the beautiful final home of Jefferson Davis, is destroyed. It survived Camille.clarionledger.com NEWS0110/50830019 Houston is throwing open its door to the hurricane victims. houstonchronicle.com It could be us the next time. The people in the Superdome are coming to Houston and will be housed in the Astrodome. I expect calls for assistance soon. The Houston Independent School District will accept refugee children into the schools (classified as "homeless".) Temporary office suite businesses are providing space so folks who are able can get back to work. So many have lost homes AND their place of employment. With no income, only those with substantial savings can hold out for long. I expect a fair number will simply leave and find employment somewhere else. Economic consequences: 25% of all Midwestern grain is shipped out of the Port of New Orleans on the world's busiest waterway. Also, NO is the #1 coffee handling port, #1 rubber import port. Almost 1/3 of all our petroleum comes from the Gulf of Mexico. Those rigs are out of commission for at least a few days, and some much longer. Gasoline prices are rising as a consequence, and shortages are already developing. Expect the price of food and anything else shipped by truck to go up. The cost of anything made from oil--such as plastics--will go up. What's made of plastic? Milk cartons, toothbrushes, car parts, juice boxes, egg cartons, and much more.<<<<<
