OPEC is getting relatively rich, certainly richer, and yes there is an economic cost to paying so much for oil. Its less then the cost of trying to reduce oil consumption by 50% in 10 years but it is high.

You couldn't be more wrong. You are ignoring the military costs of being an oil economy. We have to defend our oil sources and we have to get involved with all sorts of shady regimes to ensure our oil supply. This is extraordinarily costsly. It's costing us $300B in Iraq in a 3 year period. It cost us untold billions on 9/11. If we'd taken the $300B we're spending on Iraq and spent it on alternative fuels for our cars and trucks, we could have achieved a 50% reduction in consumption in 10 years. That's the painful reality.

The plain fact of the matter is that we can no longer afford not to get off the oil as soon as possible.
