This is a coffee shop thread on SI, JC. Not a very serious place! While I love to post very heavily footnoted articles here on occasion, I suppose it's fair to say that the idea of scholarly here falls somewhat short of academic standards. In this medium, a serious article by a clinical psychologist seems scholarly enough that it should be at least considered. Certainly it is not superficial, and in the discussion of brainwashing in the military, it and accounts by people who experienced it seem scholarly enough to consider for serious discussion. It is also possible that this psychologist has done research and written such scholarly articles on this subject, but they don't show up on a web search.

I thought you had a Ph.D., so it is always quite surprising to me when we disagree! I do not see how anyone with such sterling academic credentials as you have would not always think exactly as I do, which is, of course, always absolutely spot on totally right on all subjects, including those of which I have no firsthand experience whatsoever! ;-}
