There is an old USAF base on the Mississippi coast. I was there years ago. but can't recall the name. Whoops...just hit me... Keesler AFB. But I don't know if it has been closed and the old bases with the old facilities are not suitable for a quick big crowd without improvements and a staff imo. Besides that Keesler was right in the eye of this storm. Ft Polk, LA has been improved to current standards, but it is not much closer than Houston, and I doubt there is much extra facilities there.

Is there any possibility that some of the past and present bases targeted for closure could house civilians? I don't know of any bases that are just sitting idle at this point. Temporary housing can be found all over the country. We need to distribute the load into functioning communities asap. These folks need a new lease on life. Jobs, schools, permanent homes, etc. They will not find that on old, run down, out of the way, military bases. It will tax them to handle this many, but we have NGO offices all over the country with a long and successful track record of resettling refugees...including Lutheran Family Services, Catholic Social Services, Hebrew Refugee Services, World Relief Church, an Episcopal NGO, etc. The advantage to resettling these folks over foreign refugees are numerous...including language, driving skills, familiarization with laws and mores, etc. It can be done and must be done. The wider the distribution the easier the task. First priority should be to locate them near other family and/or friends elsewhere in the country for obvious support reasons.
