It would be advantageous to let the Mississippi return to it's natural course at Atchafalaya. It would return on it's own were it not for the effort to maintain the port of New Orleans.
Maybe it's time for a new port.

I think New Orleans is rebuilt - just as NYC was re-built at great cost after 9-11, just as San Francisco or LA would be rebuilt after the Big One.
Also - New Orleans has more port traffic than any other US city, and we get a huge amount of oil and gas through there.
Not to mention the history, and that the French Quarter is still intact.
We don't abandon an entire city in the US...
