I keep thinking of the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz who wanted a brain, and the Wizard told him, "What you need is a diploma."

Don't be too impressed by a Ph.D. More than brains, it represents persistence. It is a minimum of three years of slogging along as a grunt, teaching courses for the Professors and kowtowing to them at all times... until you join the club and can then exploit your own "teaching assistants." I knew of sad cases of Ph.D candidates who were actually held back by their Chairperson because they were too valuable to lose. Like so many other things in life, it's politics as much as anything else.

On brainwashing, here is a piece you might have missed. And it is by a Ph.D. to boot!
