I hope this idea gets legs. Thousands are without homes now, and I doubt they have the means to rebuild. I wonder how much property was simply washed away or turned into permanent lakes? The tax assessor's office is going to have to sort it all out. I would guess that even if some have the wherewithal to rebuild, their land no longer exists.

Old military bases would seem the natural solution for extended residency.

AFB just East of Panama City (I forget the name)

Tyndall. Spent three years there before moving on to Keesler in Biloxi (along with Camille). Tyndall's the sort of base where folks try to homestead. I lived in base housing right on the water and a block from the yacht club where we had both power and sail boats.
