Europe subsidizes their train system with taxes on gasoline and telephone calls. It keeps older and unsafe drivers off the road, reduces congestion, and reduces fuel consumption. It would cost America immense amounts of money to build a comparable system. Gasoline prices are in the news rather than oil prices for two reasons. First, people buy gasoline not oil. Second. the current problem in the US is 10% of America's refineries are shut down due to the hurricane. There's plenty of oil but a shortage of gasoline. So gasolines prices are rising much faster and higher than oil prices. .
