And does tithing have any numerical amounts attached to it? Is he correct that its supposed to be 10% of annual income?

I asked a Muslim this morning, and he told me that the 2.5% number comes from originally (like, during and immediately following their prophet Mohammed's life) that 2.5% of long term assets (assets you've had for more than a year) was the annual state tax. Then, as the state wanted to raise more taxes, the 2.5% number became an amount that individuals are supposed to give to less well off individuals, as a person to person thing, and the state proceeded with separate normal taxation system. This explanation actually took > 10 minutes. Maybe he thought I was more interested in learning about Islam than I was (I just wanted to clarify the percentage).
