Really? Well my mom's a pretty devoted Christian, and I seriously doubt that she gave 10% of her annual income throughout her adult life to the church. Never asked her about it, but if she did, that explains why we were always shopping at Mervyns for clothes....:-)

I once had a client who complained to me about the variance in his monthly earnings. A devoted Baptist he was, and some months he would earn a couple hundred thousand, followed by a month of losing $100 or more. Tremendous monthly variance.

He came in to see me about this and explained his real problem: In the big months, he tithes his $10K or 20K (10%, as you said) -- but then when he loses money the next month, he doesn't get a refund on his tithes. So, by year end, he had tithed far more than 10% due to the interim losses.

I suggested he start tithing quarterly and see what happens and never heard anything else about it.
