But somebody with a gun will take all that dog food away from you. Looters would be much more interested in stealing a gun than stealing dog food. From what I have read, when police do urban warfare training drills, defense almost always wins, even when outgunned. It's much easier to ambush someone than to move forward. Guns, even handguns, are not especially superior to a knife within about a ten foot radius - easily obtained within a typical house. By this I mean that the gun owner might shoot the knife assailant but likely get stabbed in the process.
