Rock, as you know, ENER (Enegy Conversion Devices Inc) owns the fundamental patents to Nickel Metal Hydrid batteries and receives royalties from all NIMH batteries made. All other NiMH battery manufacturers are licensees of ENER's technology. ENER has separated licenses for automotive applications from other uses, so they have better control over batteries for cars. Cobasys is their joint venture with Chevron (Chevron Technology Ventures LLC). Battery supply is one of the major bottlenecks in hybrid vehicle production right now.

ENER is a great play right now on so many fronts that it is hard to comprehend.
