RE: "And what's up with all the radio reports I heard earlier today about helicopter rescue lifts from the Superdome being suspended because the helicopters were being shot at? Rumor? Or fact?"

The article said the govt would not confirm if this happened. But a private ambulance helicopter company said that it was not sending their people into the area.

In a nutshell, this area needs military helicopters to be flown into the area. There's no reason why they couldn't send a platoon of military helicopters into the area - with few exceptions, those can handle gun fire for the most part. If they can send those helicopters into hostile zones in Afghanistan, they can certainly send those helicopters into New Orleans to save people's lives.

Basically, they should have dropped food/water supplies into New Orleans citizens efficiently as they did in Afghanistan.

On a different note, a govt agency predicted there were three main disaster risks for the USA and they submitted this information to the govt prior to 9/11. Here's their three risk areas:
1- terrorism
2- new orleans flooding
3- san fran earthquake

It's amazing - 2 out of 3 of their predictions have happened only 5 years after their report was submitted to the President. ( They might want to get a little bit better at airborning food supplies into a region before #3 happens. )

RE: "This might be the only time a city has sustained MORE damage AFTER a storm than it did while the storm was occurring???? (not sure)"

This factual information is what makes their mistake inexcusable. They should have had military helicopters on standby ready to go. Rather than waiting four days. We treat lost hikers better than this.

What's up with all the radio reports I've been hearing all day today about thousands of National Guardsmen being deployed to NO over the next several days to try to restore some semblance of law and order in that bedlam? Just a minute ago, I heard the DC National Guard is going.

Well, I think we can see that this tragedy would have utilized ALL available guard resources under any circumstances. But the fact is many of them are deployed in Iraq, and there are obviously NOT ENOUGH personnel for disaster duty, I think anyone can see that so to put out PRs like this one, is just irresponsible.

WASHINGTON Though their ranks are thinned by Iraq deployments, National Guard officials say they have more than enough personnel for disaster duty in Mississippi and Louisiana.

What this is saying is- "we sent our resources to Iraq, and we don't need a contingency plan, because the remaining staff can handle it". Sorry but the remaining staff can't handle it. It might have been that 100% of the National Guard couldn't have handled Katrina, I don't know. But to act like this bare bones crew is "ok for the job"- just because they don't want to acknowledge that the staff they need is at war- is irresponsible imho.

And what's up with all the radio reports I heard earlier today about helicopter rescue lifts from the Superdome being suspended because the helicopters were being shot at?

Thats why you use military helicopters and Guard personnel. The people being shot at are civilians.
