I'm not sure about Diamond's book "Collapse", although I think that "Guns, Germs and Steel" was one of the most interesting books I've EVER read. I read Joseph Tainter's book on collapse a few years ago -- a book written in 1989 I believe -- which is still the seminal book on the topic. I'd recommend it highly.
