Leave aside the issue of environmental planning, leave aside the issue of the war in Iraq, leave aside the issue of the American Empire being stretched thin, all of that, I agree, is "coulda woulda shoulda".

The very day that the disaster became known was the day to respond. And it was not done. Every minute lost was a minute wasted, and for some that minute can never be recovered.

There are still people sitting on roofs in St. Bernard Parish, with nobody getting to them but tugboat pilots who have by now probably run out of fuel, food and water themselves.

Screw politics. Where is the leadership?

By the way, it's not just the government that dropped the ball.

I tried to volunteer at Catholic Charities, specifically to help with Katrina. They didn't know whether there was anything I could do, they were waiting to get calls.

I can tell you that the people who they were waiting to call them haven't had phones for days.
