Yep. I learned that during Loma Prieta. I didn't even have a battery operated radio (my neighborhood lost power for a day). Actually, a lot of people left work early to watch the world series (A's-Giants). I did - and was just sitting down to watch the pre-game coverage when the quake hit. Until my neighbor came over with a radio, and I learned the extent of the damage, I was just upset that I was missing the game!

BTW, wood framed houses do well in earthquakes - I could feel mine twisting back and forth at one point. These days I have a store of provisions. Good idea to keep hiking shoes, thermal blankets, medical kit, and water in your car was well.
