Presidents tend to have a core support that is rock solid. 30% would be surprising to see for a Republican in this conservative nation. There are still plenty of people who are doing really well under Bush. These are boom times if you're in the oil industry. Overall, the ecomony is doing OK, wages are stagnating, but the economy is fine.

Bush will have a hard time pushing through a more regressive social agenda if his ratings drop much further. At this point, he's already in big trouble. I'd take another 5% off his approval rating for the mishandling of the hurricane relief. 35% approval is coming in this month's polls, then like you said, Bush is a lame duck.

It is amazing that even the piss-poor response to Katrina isn't enough to wake middle America up to the fact that there is something really wrong with the direction this country is heading. Our lack of preparadness for a major hurricane in New Orleans can be demonstrated to be a direct result of budget cuts since Bush took office. Bush deserves much of the blame for once again dropping the ball in time of crises. 9/11 was his first dropped ball, this is the next. Amazing people support this kind of crap. No wonder we're barely a 1st world nation.
