To try to give you a feel for how the tens of thousands of needy can be successfully and relatively quickly managed, processed and started in a new life, I put together a list of needs and the sources we in SFA use. Showers and 3 sets of clean clothes. Goodwill, Salvation Army, Wal-Mart, The Gap, churches, individuals, and other orgs will provide the clothes free. Only provide what each individual can comfortably carry at this time. Personal hygiene kits NGOs, Churches Medical screening and treatment as necessary...including dental. Personal insurance, Medicaid and volunteers Temporary food supply Everyone SS cards Feds Driver's license or picture ID card State Food Stamps State School supplies Churches $50 per person per week pocket money for up to 4 months Feds Unemployment benefits State &/or Feds Relocation assistance Feds...may require reimbursement eventually. Job search assistance NGOs, volunteers and state Insurance claims - homeowners, auto, renters, business. (I got a taste of this when Karen and I had a house destroyed in the 93 Las Flores Canyon fire.) Insurance companies All of these activities should be on-going simultaneously. I heard a call this morning for 500 volunteers in Houston. I expect that to be very temporary. Once these folks are cleaned up, fed and rested, large numbers of them will volunteer and provide help that is needed. The primary emphasis should remain on life-saving as long as necessary. Security Ops and evacuation are part of that overall effort. Most of New Orleans is done for. All hands and vehicles should be working the human tragedy. uw
