For grain from the Midwest the Mississippi to NO is barge all the way. This year we have had a hitch because of the drought, the river is low. Barges can only float half a load

Couldn't the grain be offloaded at Little Rock, and bypass LA? Little Rock has bulk facilities, is off the Arkansas and Mississippi rivers, and has immediate access to major interstate highways.

EDIT: And access to rail...

After the rainfall of katrina, the Mississippi river is still low? I'd expect it would be possible to come up with work arounds to load from barge to ship even with damaged port facilities.

Talking heads are of by necessity (their sysstemic deep ignorance) doom and gloomers. America is not great because of talking heads. It is the surplus productivity of the doers that allow for the talking heads to make a living.
