There is a bit of legal folklore among lawyers to the effect that sate law requires that mortgage documents be stored in a basement, and Orleans Parish's and St. Bernard Parish's definitely are. I've never believed it to be the case, but I've never researched the issue, either. And it is damned curious that at in at least two courthouses I can think of, both in low lying areas, basements are used to store records of real estate transactions.

The original real estate records are things of beauty, with the houses drawn in pastel colors. Art, really, and there has been an effort made to treat them as such. It would be an awful loss if these beautiful ancient documents were to be lost.
