Sherry, I wish I could do more than pray for you and your dad, but that's what it's in my power to do. I hope you locate him today.

7,000 more troops head to New Orleans

By Ellen Dunkel

Knight Ridder Newspapers

Two major fires are blazing on the New Orleans waterfront. Meanwhile, evacuations are finally in full force at the squalid Superdome and convention center.

Evacuation from the Superdome had been halted for several hours this morning.

Hundreds of sick and elderly were plucked by military helicopters from the packing lot near the convention center today and carried out of the city. Lt. Col. Constance C. McNabb, medical group commander of the 149th fighter wing at Lackland Air Force base, said the operation began Friday afternoon and will continue "as long as I have choppers."
