I have a nephew who is making a career there, and from the point of view of employee salaries and benefits, they are top notch. (Disclaimer: I also have a nephew who is a manager at Wal-Mart.) On a more spiritual level, I think Costco encourages massive overconsumption, and the size of their carts and the experience of watching people pile them up has always seemed very vulgar to me. I don't enjoy shopping there. They have no environmentally sound laundry detergent, which seems like a travesty since they are a Pacific Northwest company. How hard would it be to sell one? I never said WalMart wasn't clever and manipulative in its marketing strategies, and so I see their contribution to Hurricane Katrina in that light. They are so busy destroying companies everywhere, I'm sure they can afford it. There is a documentary coming out soon about WalMart--I can hardly wait to see it! I looked on Costco's website, and they are contributing to the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, through the American Red Cross: Costco has made a $1,000,000.00 contribution pledge to the American Red Cross and, as you know, we are accepting donations from our members in all of our Costco facilities around the world. All monies raised will be channeled to the American Red Cross. As of this morning, $1,504,000.00 has been raised through Costco warehouses, thanks to the generosity of our members and employees. Additionally, we are making contributions of food, water and supplies provided by both Costco and our suppliers, and we are allocating space for the Red Cross to set-up command centers in some of our facilities that are closest to the disaster center.
