I don't know how many people are aware of this history

Well, I didn't know that dogs were used in that cruel way. It was bad enough how horses were used, such as pulling trolley cars in all weather under they dropped.

As you say, life was hard even on children. I do happen to think that the pendulum has swung so far now that we seem to think that all loss of life should be preventable. In those past times people were more resigned to calamities and disasters as a normal part of the passing parade. People grieved over the loss of loved ones but did not dwell upon it, and were more resilient in picking up the pieces and starting over again. They were not as inclined to wallow in self-pity or to look for others to blame for the misfortunes that befell them.

I think there is something to be said for that strength of character in hard times. Obviously, my rambling has come around to present day events.
