The specific brainwashing techniques used in boot camp include forced marches, chanting, humiliation, punishing the entire group for misbehavior by individuals, forced exhaustion by overexercising that sometimes ends in actual death, and the stripping of individuality by forcing recruits to refer to themselves in the third person. While I do agree that taking fairly civilized young people and teaching them to become trained killers probably actually requires brainwashing--how else could you accomplish that, and allegiance to the new group in a short period of time--I will not back down from my assertion that brainwashing is the correct terminology.

While I agree that teaching babies and children good manners and health habits involves some training, it should not be violent or abusive, as it often is in the military. And if you potty train children before they are really ready to learn this kind of self control, it is quite counter productive (but this is another subject entirely).
