Excellent points. We pay lip service to conservation while simultaneously keeping all of the incentives on the consumption side (i.e through initiatives like low income assistance). Politicians and most economists view consumption as an unalloyed good. Our cheap political culture produces few leaders, few people who are willing to stand up and ask for even minor sacrifices.
