"I'm trying to get a rough figure on of the "cost of Iraq", what amount is the basic maintenance of the troops?"

I suspect that the figure you are looking for will be dwarfed by the cost of the contractors.

The point is that when it comes to national defense or building new levees to protect a city of 1.5 million, you have to spend the money. Period, end of story.

You can argue about how badly you need a Big Dig. Or a new museum in West Virginia. Or the George W. Bush Expressway. Or repaving I-40.

But you simply cannot argue about the cost of national defense or protecting 1.25 million people against a massive flood that you KNOW is coming some day. It was the job of the political representation in New Orleans to make that happen.

The failures are those of people like John Breaux, Mary Landreiu, the Mayor of NOLA, and that idiot they call a governor -- to protect their people.
