Why not? Each state has about as much autonomy as the countries in Europe do. Except they don't have the right to coin their own money. Wait, even that isn't true any more... The analogy is interesting. I never thought of it in that way......I guess the brainwashing worked to some extent.......one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. It makes sense.......some of the arguments you hear in the EU are similar to the ones we have had for decades even centuries. However, you would think the common language would have more of a leveling effect.Ted, it has only been a few decades that most of the country has been in constant contact with the rest. It has only been since the late 50s that pretty much all of the country has had electricity, paved roads and telephone service. To top it all off, the South experienced a devastating war, an onerous occupation and lacked the economic development to put it behind them until relatively recently. Again interesting. If I am typical, most northerners see the Civil War but then don't 'see' the occupation that came after. In other words, in the northern mindset, the South has had over 100 years to get over it. But if one includes the time of the carpet baggers, then the war for the South lasted much longer.........at least until the 1900's. That would account for their considerable anger to this day. Add in the fact that the large landholders encouraged a feeling of alienation from the rest of the country, any all differences in culture is likely to be magnified. How's that?Racism, of course, is part of it. For one, to define any group there is an instinctive need to have those that are in and those that are out. It never hurts to have a group that you hold as your inferiors. The lower your socio-economic status the stronger this need is. The wealthy are lucky, pretty much everyone are their inferiors, they don't have to be aggressive about it. All poor white Southerners had were blacks. Any attempt to level the playing field had to be fought, tooth and nail. But this only applies to the groups in the abstract, once they get to know each other individually there is often acceptance. Yes, but when it came to racism, leveling the playing field was difficult in the north as well. With northern whites, there was a double whammy.......blacks did not look like them nor act like them plus they were southern. For many northerners, it was a difficult pill to swallow and accept. That's why blacks tended to be more ghettoized in the north as opposed to the South. ted
