"If I'm desperate and my family is starving, what is my first reaction?"

Bullshit is as bullshit does.

Would you break into a store and get water and food for them? Would you shoot at a helicopter to attract attention? The images of the looting were almost totally of people getting the necessities. Looters felt a need to approach reporters to explain what they were doing. They felt they didn't have a choice.

Yes, there were some who engaged in criminal behavior. That always happens in the wake of a hurricane, regardless of where it strikes. Which is why the National Guard is boots on the ground within hours. Not days.

When the Great Hurricane of 1900 struck Galveston, it was one of the wealthiest cities in the country. It was totally decimated. Things got so bad that the military had to be brought in to restore order. Looting was so rampart that a significant percentage of the death toll was looters who were shot. Local legend hold that the military was so sensitive that you could be shot for just picking up something on the beach. Just imagine the chaos that would result in that situation. No, there aren't any records of assault, murder or rape during that time. But I wouldn't be surprised if it occurred, when there isn't a security framework, those things happen. Look at what happened in the West between the end of the Civil War and the imposition of law enforcement. While the Wild West is viewed as romantic now, it was a very dangerous place and time.

You don't have the slightest idea of what the situation is like. I don't either, but after living in Galveston and learning about its history, I have some glimmer. Bottom line, order has to be restored as soon as possible or things will descend into chaos. It isn't a socio-economic thing, it is a fact of life.

Bullshit your self. If I'm desperate and my family is starving, what is my first reaction? Is it to shoot at the rescuers, rape any passing women, and steal digital T.V.s? No, those are not the actions of desperate men. Those are the actions of criminals in their idea of heaven: a place where there are thousands of people with no police around to hold them accountable.

Don't give me this desperation crap. This type of behavior didn't happen in New York. The fact that prisoners were let loose in lieu of evacuating them to other prisons is the BEST explanation I've seen for the rampant crime wave. Desperate people looking for food and water don't rape and steal T.V.s. They may kill for food, but they don't shoot at doctors and rescue workers, because that is precisely what they are looking for.

Oh such unandulterated crap. First let me clear up one issue. The guy was watching Fox News. When the hell do they ever get anything right? During the flooding, they showed only one prison that had to be evacuated. The prisoners were relocated to a freeway on ramp and were guarded until they were moved to another prison. To my knowledge no prisoners were let loose in the city willingly by the authorities.

And to compare NO to NYC doesn't make sense. The disaster was confined to one neighborhood of NYC, not the entire city. The horror of 9/11 was not so much its magntitude but how it was perpetrated. Nonetheless, the GOP treats Guliliani like he's this superhero when in reality, he was simply a good mayor doing his job. If there was ever a GOP mayor who was a hero, it was Richard Riordan of LA.......he turned that city around singlehandedly......but I suspect he's too liberal for most of the GOP.
