No. When that word was regularly used by whites, it was pretty neutral. Unless prefaced with the word "damn" or in a sentence that included the word "lynch". Middle class blacks just weren't visible,except maybe in the larger cities. All the blacks were poor.

One more Ted: I know black people, at least guys, have no problem calling each other "nigger". Maybe you are not familiar with that or just tend to refuse this fact of reality, but nevertheless that seems to be a fact.

If in doubt, why not check with one of your black friends?
