But the North was fighting the war with the poor. If you had enough money, you could pay someone to take your place. Many of the soldiers resented their situation. That, and losing a lot made their morale pretty low. If the South could have captured and held onto Washington DC, that would have pretty much ended it.

And yes, holding those types of grudges is a stupid thing to do. But it happens.
