Someday, maybe there will be an indepth book or two about this situation....How did the First Responders who were supposedly trained, and supposedly had equipment to respond to emergencies, end up not doing their job and just walking off the job...???

I can understand those who had to go to rescue their families....but I also can understand that they should have given their Chief notice, at the very least.

You have to be able to visualize the entire picture.

It is a simple matter of risk vs reward and protecting loved ones.

80% of NO was underwater. There were no operable phones, and for many, no way to drive to work.

Many who went to rescue their own families learned they had lost everything and found their families in dire straights. Those who had reasonable options for their families went back to work.

Then they got shot at.

Street cops have a lot of savvy. They already knew they had completely incompetent leadership and no back-up.

The smartest fighters do not get into fights they cannot win.

End of story.

There is a lesson here.
If your emergency plan includes relying on first responders you should expect to end up in a dome...but only if you are lucky.
