Bullshit! The path and growth of the storm was predicted even before it turned north. The evacuation should have been started 24 hours sooner and busses could have been brought in from all around the southeast to include the sick, elderly, and the poor. It was known at the time of the evacuation order that there were at least 100.000 people that were unable to evacuate. Anyone with a half a brain knew what the worst case scenario would be had NO sustained a direct hit from a major hurricane and all they did was say "Every man for himself" and cross their fingers. The mayor didn't do enough to prepare for a disaster and neither did the governor. States as far away as Michigan offered to lend MP's from it's National Guard BEFORE THE STORM HIT to maintain order and the La. governor didn't accept the offer til 2 days after it passed. FEMA, as usual, was moving at a slug's pace while American citizens were dying from lack of food, water, and medicine until the President finally told them to get some supplies in there NOW. I don't care if the people in charge are Republicans or Democrats, one would have to be a blind asshole to think this couldn't have been handled better. We have hurricanes here in the southeast all the time, and the Red Cross, The Salvation Army, the power companies from neighboring states, the chain stores like Lowes and HD, and private citizens are the first ones in to help out while the government agencies drag their feet. They've had plenty practice to get their act together but they didn't, and now scores people are dying every day. A congressional investigation was ordered to look into the handling of the situation. Let's hope it gives us our moneys worth. Look, Chas, a disaster is a disaster - be it a hurricane, an earthquake, or a terrorist attack. Everyone in this country should be alarmed. If this is the way a hurricane is handled, what kind of help can we expect in the event of an UNpredictable crisis?
