RE:"Flagstaff is a pretty high elevation right? I think that was one of the cities where my car used to freak out on my drive back and forth from Austin to the Bay area"

6,905 feet above sea level
A minor carb or injector pump adjustment will fix it. Nice ski resort near Flagstaff, BTW. homepage.mac.com

Flagstaff's at 7000 ft. The University of Northern Arizona is there. It's the "liberal" oasis of Arizona, which probably means it's more conservative than any city in MA.

It is like 9k sf. The best of all worlds in the whole AZ and NM area IMHO might be in the areas half an hour to the south heading towards Phoenix in places like Sedona and Prescot. Lower elevations and not extremes of Flagstaff or Phoenix and also stays much greener than Santa Fe.
