re: I'm not complaining. They are. They think they are permanent residents while Houston thought they were merely a waypoint.

After six days of extreme physical and psychological trauma they are finally in a safe, air conditioned shelter, with adequate food and water, and medical care. I can imagine why some of these battered folks don't want to get up and leave for the unknown.

I doubt that any are dreaming of spending the rest of their lives in the Astrodome. But frankly, after the hell they have been through, I wouldn't blame them.

However, after FEMA has leased cruise ships to handle these people, Houston has said, "The Astrodome is a temporary stopoff, not a home", and the refugees refuse to relocate to the provided facilities?

I don't know. This doesn't seem like a great start to me.

Well, I am hearing two different stories........yours and the one I heard last nite. The version I heard made it very clear that the Astrodome is only temporary housing. As they ascertain people's housing and other needs, they plan to move them out. They showed one elderly man leaving the Astrodome Sunday and going into a senior's facility in suburban Houston.

Last nite, an elderly couple flew into Seattle. They had been in the Astrodome until yesterday. The Red Cross helped them locate their family here and to make arrangements to get here. I am sure similar scenes are being played out throughout the nation.

Now just for moment try to remember.......the people in the Astrodome are just like you and me. How many nites would you like to spend on a stadium floor sleeping with 20K other people? How long would you like to have to wait each day to take a shower..........what is too long.....one hour, two hours? Some have to wait most of the day.

As I understand it, the Astrodome is a staging area to relocate people either in the Houston area or somewhere in the Gulf region, or to fly them to other states. Some are being flown out here from Houston this week. Most states in the union are taking some of the victims. In the meantime, every state is trying to raise funds to help support them. The efforts to help out these people that are so evident in TX and AR are being replicated throughout the nation, albeit on a smaller scale. No one is expecting TX and AR to shoulder the load alone.

As for the hurricane victims, there will be the die hard few who will be difficult to move but I suspect they will be the minority. Nonetheless, people need to be patient.....they've been through a lot. The old couple who came last nite were from Metairie..........before they got to the Astrodome they had to sleep under a freeway for two nites. They were freaked. These people need time to adjust..........to figure out where they want to will live and then find a job and new housing. Try to be patient. I am sure they will be very appreciative of your patience and understanding.
